The world is poised to go crazy, like it does every four years, for the World Cup. One of the most popular sporting events in the world, the World Cup gets underway on June 12 in Brazil and wraps up a month later on July 13. Whether you'll be watching from the first whistle or tuning in only after the the brackets have narrowed, these six iPhone soccer (or football, as most of the world calls it) apps can keep you in the loop on the latest news and scores. Even major names like ESPN are getting in on the action with their own soccer apps.

1. FIFA Official App

This free app, for football's global governing body, is a great place to go to get your World Cup news, of course, but given FIFA's worldwide reach, it's a terrific app for following your favorite teams throughout the year. You'll get breaking news, photos, videos, and more.

2. ESPN FC Soccer & World Cup

The official football app from ESPN offers the in-depth coverage "the worldwide leader in sports" is known for. The app features live video highlights of key plays, reaction and analysis from ESPN's team of top analysts and commentators, and breaking news. And, when the World Cup has ended, this free app can help you keep up on the action in the English Premiere League, La Liga, MLS, the Bundesliga, and much more.

3. Univision Deportes

If your favorite team is from Latin America, or you simply are interested in following the World Cup in Spanish, the Univision Deportes app has everything you need. It offers streaming highlights, up-to-the-minute scores and news, social media content from leagues, teams, and players, and much more. And, as with other apps, it covers sports throughout the year, so it will be be useful long after the World Cup ends.

4. Brazil 2014 Countdown

Can't wait for the World Cup to start? Are you counting the days until the first match? How about the minutes? Well, if you want to really get excited for the event, this free app provides a running countdown until the World Cup begins—down to the second.

5. World Soccer Finals

World Soccer Finals offers all the features you'd expect from a good World Cup app: schedules, scores, detailed statistics, player information, and more. The app is free, but a US$0.99 upgrade brings a nice feature: the ability to add the matches you want to watch to your calendar app so you can make sure you don't miss a second of the action (the upgrade removes ads, too).

6. FIFA 14 by EA Sports

If the World Cup inspires you to play soccer, why not do it on your iPhone? FIFA Soccer 14 (Free, with many in-app purchases) is a realistic, action-packed soccer game that uses the iPhone's accelerometer and touchscreen to control the action. You can play as one of over 600 teams (over 16,000 players!) from 33 different leagues, and there's even a Wi-Fi multiplayer feature so you can compete against your friends. Console editions of this game are also available -- the Xbox 360 version gets excellent reviews.
